On The Wings Of The Nightingale

Merethe Hopland @ Marilyn (NY)

Modeling is like silent acting. Regardless if we are talking of stills or motions, it's a performance of replacing words by emotions: the translation of feelings through face's expressions and body language. We'll never repeat this enough times, we'll never get the impression of being broken records when we do so. And precious examples of it are always opportunities of writing priceless entries here. Merethe Hopland by Billy Kidd, inspiration squared. Merethe is the perfect reminder that fresh never means green and the right proportion of maturity is always welcome where intensity matters. And intensity certainly counts a lot when we say 'performance' and call the model a 'silent performer' as it requires her to release a true part of herself to let us believe in the story she tells. Believe our eyes and believe in something surreal. On the other side of the lens, it takes an inspired photographer to capture the right moments and a connection between the two main actors to push imagination far beyond its usual borders.

  • I was amazingly shocked to see that version of her. I remember her from Milan: she was so sweet, the most perfect body of a model I've ever seen, but the face compared to the hair was too sweet. She needed a change and it showed us how good she is. I even remember a casting for Marilyn, I was so afraid they wouldn't like her blonde bob! But they did see that huge potential and made it work. That is exactly what good agents should be like. It's lovely to see that process.
