Kelly Mittendorf @ Marilyn (NY)

Third time this week, third topic about Kelly Mittendorf and another opportunity to show another side of her work. You already saw her in a quiet mood on her images by Nando Esparza and had a glimpse at her recent digitals where we let you imagine another part of the story was on its way. And here we go. Kelly by Billy Kidd, capturing the crazy side yet not in the way you could expect. Extreme features would certainly work well for some spooky mood but the result is surprisingly lighthearted and Kelly pulls out sincere smiles instead of gimmicky grins. If poetry is our main motivation to pick up the pen, some more prosaic topics also cross our minds while looking at the photographs, especially as this is our third feature on the same model, the same week. The lesson to learn is pretty simple yet its importance is still underrated. When people think of test shots, they think first of showing a face or a body while the real purpose of such pictures should always be for the model to express and this is only possible when she goes slightly out of the beaten tracks. In other words: the more creativity from the photograph, the better for the model's book. And there shouldn't be place left for basic, tasteless stuff in any portfolio.
