Barcelona fashion week s/s 08
Just before Berlin fashion weeks begun, Barcelona had its own fashion week too. What's up in Spain ? Talented designers showing impressive collections. Let's review my favorite shows...
Sure, hats are the first things you notice in that show but besides of that, it's a very laid-back collection offering striped tops and touches of metallic fabrics used with subtlety. Some interesting shape effects as well even if the whole collection's major vibe is a bit too much deconstructed for my tastes. As I've already said it it's really laid-back and it lacks a bit of more definite shapes and cuts. A very nice collection though.
Pink is everywhere in Josep Castro's s/s 08 collection. From head to toe and from the first outfits to the last - no, not the last, the last one is the only one that is not in pink but in white - pink is spread all over the collection. And it works. The fact that there's only one color used here, especially a bright and daring one puts more emphasis on the rest, I think of those marvelous shapes (a perfect balance between strict cuts and oustanding volume effects on some pants) popping up everytime a model hits the runway. Strong Viktor & Rolf vibe as well. Though, there is an obvious limit: if you don't like pink and you're not so fond of those shapes. It could happen, this collection is a kind of "love it or forget it".
Might be one of my favorite collections in Barcelona. It slightly reminds me of Sao Paulo's latest fashion week in some items and in its overall mood. I like the choice of the colors and the mix of pieces. There's an architectural dimension to it but nothing badly overwhelming, rather a few references or additions that goes on well with some "simple" t-shirst and pants. Shapes and volumes work as well, in the same range of ideas, supported by some nice, diversified kind of fabrics.
Cute and eye-catching ! Full of lovely dresses, light colors (from white to pastels), delicate shapes and little details, Teresa Helbig s/s 08 collection is a pure delight for the eyes including some brilliant finds like the last dresses. I get usually quickly tired by light colors like those but there something here that makes it work, it's hard to describe but easy to undertstand when you check the collection.
Shapes do it better ! The famous label Txell Miras' s/s 08 collection is all about shapes and volumes. And it rescued the whole show from boredom as all outfits were black, white or black and white. You might think I'm odd thinking a collection based on black and white could be boring and not an all-pink collection but as pink gives an immediate kick to your eyes and push your mind directly to the question "do I like it or not", black and white are so often used that designers choosing those as the unique colors have to think twice about how to make it personal. Sure, you can hide a mediocre collection painting in bright pink but it's not the case with Josep Castro s/s 08 as you can hide a boring collection behind black and white classicism assuming a certain commercial success. Though it's not the case here as well, there is a clear part of creativity in this show, at least a specific identity...
